Gematria Definition
Gematria (Hebrew: גימטריא) is an alphanumeric system that assigns numerical values to letters, words, and phrases. When two words share the same numerical value, they are believed to share a spiritual or meaningful connection.
The practice originated in ancient Hebrew tradition and has been used for thousands of years to interpret religious texts, find hidden meanings, and explore mystical connections between concepts.
History of Gematria
Gematria has ancient roots dating back over 2,000 years. The practice appears in early Jewish mystical texts and was extensively developed in Kabbalistic tradition.
- 8th century BCE: Early inscriptions show numerological practices in Assyria
- 2nd century BCE: Hebrew gematria appears in Jewish religious texts
- 1st century CE: Greek isopsephy (their version of gematria) becomes popular
- 12th century: Kabbalistic scholars develop advanced gematria systems
- Modern era: English gematria systems emerge for analyzing English text
How Does Gematria Work?
Each letter in an alphabet is assigned a numerical value. To find the gematria of a word, you simply add up the values of all its letters.
Example: "GOD" in English Ordinal
Types of Gematria Systems
English Ordinal
The most common system: A=1, B=2, through Z=26. Simple to calculate and widely used.
Jewish/Hebrew Gematria
Traditional Hebrew values applied to English. Uses larger values like J=600, V=700.
Full Reduction
All values reduced to single digits (1-9). A=1, K=2 (1+1), T=2 (2+0).
Reverse Ordinal
The alphabet reversed: Z=1, Y=2, through A=26.
English Extended
Ordinal values multiplied by 6: A=6, B=12, C=18, etc.
